Women's Boxing Classes in State College
Legacy Boxing & Combat Sports Academy offers dedicated women's boxing classes in State College built around real technique, individual progression, and a supportive training environment. These aren't general fitness classes with boxing as a theme. We teach actual boxing: footwork, defense, head movement, combinations, and mitt work — the same fundamentals taught to our competitive athletes, adapted for your goals and pace.
Classes are led by USA Boxing certified coaches, including Coach Roth, the 2023 NCBA Coach of the Year and Head Coach of the Penn State Boxing Team. Every session is structured to help you improve from wherever you start, with patient instruction and positive reinforcement throughout.
Whether you are stepping into a gym for the first time or coming back to fitness after a long break, our women's boxing classes near Penn State give you a space that is focused, safe, and genuinely welcoming. No experience is needed to join, and sparring is never required — not unless you decide you want to pursue it on your own terms.
What You'll Learn
Each class builds on the session before it. You'll develop the core skills of boxing — stance, footwork, combinations, defense, and movement — through structured drills and focused mitt work. Our coaches emphasize proper form from day one so you build habits that lead to real progress, not just a sweat.
We use the Shoulder Tag drill, a Cuban boxing method, to develop reflexes, timing, and spatial awareness without any contact. It's one of the most effective tools for building ring intelligence, and it's safe for any experience level. As you advance, drills become more complex and your conditioning grows alongside your technique.
Many women who train with us find that boxing builds confidence that carries outside the gym. The discipline, focus, and physical capability you develop here affect how you carry yourself everywhere else. That is the Legacy difference.

More Than a Workout
Women who train at Legacy build skills that last. Here's what sets our program apart from fitness boxing and cardio kickboxing classes.
Real Boxing Skills
We teach the same fundamentals as our competitive program: stance, footwork, jab, cross, hooks, uppercuts, and defense. You will actually know how to box.
Certified Coaches
Every class is led by USA Boxing certified coaches — including the 2023 NCBA Coach of the Year. You are learning from credentialed experts, not personal trainers with boxing mitts.
Measurable Progress
Our structured approach means every session builds on the last. You will see and feel real improvement in your technique, conditioning, and confidence over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any boxing experience to join?
No experience is needed. Most women who join our boxing classes start as complete beginners. Every class builds from fundamentals, so you'll learn proper form and technique from day one — regardless of your background.
Will I have to spar or make contact with anyone?
Sparring is never required. You'll train on heavy bags, mitts, and use skill-building drills like Shoulder Tag that develop reflexes and timing without contact. Sparring is only introduced if and when you decide you want to pursue it — always supervised and at your own pace.
Is this a real boxing class or more of a fitness class?
It's real boxing. We teach proper technique — footwork, stance, defense, combinations, and head movement — the same fundamentals used by our competitive athletes. You'll get a great workout, but you'll also walk away knowing how to actually box. This is not cardio kickboxing.
What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable athletic clothing and a water bottle are all you need for your first class. We have loaner gloves and wraps available for beginners. As you continue, we recommend getting your own gloves and hand wraps — but you don't need anything on day one.
Can Penn State students and staff join?
Absolutely. Many of our members are Penn State students and faculty. We're located minutes from campus at 2820 E College Ave with free on-site parking, and our Monday and Wednesday evening class times fit a student schedule. Coach Roth also leads the Penn State Boxing Club.
How do I get started?
Your first class is free. You can reach out through our contact page to let us know you're coming, or simply show up 10–15 minutes before a Monday or Wednesday evening class. We'll get you set up with equipment, introduce you to the group, and have you training right away. No sign-up or commitment required to start.
