What Makes Legacy MMA Training Different?

Our MMA curriculum is built around Kosen Judo for ground control and submissions, Muay Thai for kicks, knees, and clinch work, and striking fundamentals for hands and footwork. Wrestling and takedowns tie it all together. We teach you to transition between striking, clinching, and ground fighting as one fluid system – not isolated techniques from disconnected arts.

Classes are led by Coach Derek Roth, a nationally recognized instructor and former competitor with over 30 years of experience across multiple martial arts disciplines. As Head Coach of the Penn State Boxing Club and the 2023 NCBA Coach of the Year, he brings a rare level of knowledge and professionalism to every session. You'll be learning from a coach who knows how to develop fighters and beginners alike.

Coach Roth holds a USA Judo brown belt and is a USA Judo certified instructor – credentials that back Legacy's Kosen Judo curriculum with real authority. Kosen Judo is a ground-focused style of judo developed in Japanese university competition, where fighters are rewarded for newaza (ground techniques) rather than penalized for it. It's the historical root of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Mitsuyo Maeda, who taught the Gracie family, was a Kosen Judo practitioner. At Legacy, our fighters learn submissions, sweeps, pins, and guard work from the source, giving them a grappling foundation built for real MMA.

We don't just teach isolated techniques or "random" moves. Our integrated approach connects striking, clinch work, and grappling skills into a fluid system that builds real fighting capability – whether you're sparring, preparing for your first amateur fight, or just training to push yourself. Every student receives focused instruction and a clear progression plan, with live practice (drilling and controlled sparring) tailored to your experience and goals. No wasted reps, no guesswork – just real training with real results.

Frequently Asked Questions about MMA Classes

Do I need any experience or to be in shape before joining?

Not at all. Our MMA program welcomes complete beginners – many of our members are Penn State students who had never trained before joining. You'll start with fundamentals and build skills and conditioning over time. Prior fitness or experience is a bonus, not a requirement. Come as you are.

What should I wear or bring to class? Do I need my own gear?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. Wrestling shoes are recommended for mat work. We have loaner gloves and gear for beginners. As you continue, we recommend getting your own gloves, wraps, mouthguard, and shin guards – but nothing is needed on day one.

Is MMA training safe for beginners? Will I have to spar or get hit?

Safety comes first. Beginners focus on drilling and light-contact exercises – you won't be thrown into hard sparring. Any live work is supervised and matched to your experience level. Protective gear is always worn. More intense sparring is introduced gradually and only when you're ready. It's always optional.

Can Penn State students join your MMA classes?

Absolutely. A large part of our membership is Penn State students and staff. We're minutes from campus with free parking, and evening and Saturday class times fit a student schedule. Coach Derek also leads the PSU Boxing Club, so you're training under someone who knows the Penn State community.

Do you offer MMA classes for teens or kids?

Our MMA classes are open to teens ages 16 and up, training alongside adults with coaching adjusted to their level. For younger children, we offer separate youth boxing programs focused on foundational skills in a safe, age-appropriate setting. Reach out and we'll help find the right fit.

Will I get to compete or fight if I train here?

That's completely up to you. Many members train for fitness, confidence, and personal development without ever competing. If you do want to compete in MMA, boxing, or grappling, Coach Derek has experience preparing fighters for amateur competition and will guide you when you're ready. No pressure either way.

How do I get started and try a class?

Your first class is free. Contact us to schedule your intro class, or drop in a few minutes early before any MMA session. We'll get you oriented, introduce you to the coach, and have you training with the group on day one.
