Boxing Classes in State College, PA Legacy Boxing & Combat Sports Academy
USA Boxing Certified Coaching – Beginners to Competitors
Build real technique, conditioning, and confidence in structured classes led by USA Boxing certified coaches near Penn State. We train all skill levels from first-timers learning fundamentals to competitive fighters preparing for the ring. Your first class is free.
What to Expect in Our Boxing Classes
At Legacy Boxing & Combat Sports Academy, we teach the same techniques used by Golden Gloves competitors, All-Americans, and National Champions. Our boxing classes are structured, progressive, and designed for adults, teens, and women of all experience levels.
Classes are led by USA Boxing certified coaches, including Coach Derek Roth – Head Coach of the nationally ranked Penn State University Boxing Club. Coach Roth was named the 2023 NCBA Coach of the Year and brings over 30 years of experience to every session.
Our programs emphasize real boxing: form, footwork, defense, and conditioning. Sparring is never required – instead, we use technical drills like Shoulder Tag, a Cuban boxing method that sharpens reflexes and timing in a safe, controlled way.
Whether you're training for competition, looking to get in shape, or trying boxing for the first time, Legacy offers a focused path to progress. Every session builds on fundamentals and challenges you to improve.
We also offer dedicated women's boxing classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings, coached in a focused, supportive environment. Same certified coaching, same real technique. Check the dedicated page for details and schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions about Boxing Classes
Do I need any boxing experience to join?
No experience is needed. Most of our members started as complete beginners. Every class covers fundamentals alongside advanced work, so you'll build skills at your own pace with guidance from USA Boxing certified coaches.
Will I have to spar? Is it safe?
Sparring is never required. You'll train on heavy bags, mitts, and partner drills long before sparring is introduced. When you're ready, sparring is supervised, matched to your level, and protective gear is always worn. Safety is our top priority.
What should I wear or bring to my first class?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. We have loaner gloves and wraps available for beginners. As you continue training, we recommend investing in your own gloves and hand wraps – but you don't need anything on day one.
Do you offer women's boxing classes?
Yes. We offer dedicated women's boxing classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings with the same certified coaching in a focused, supportive environment. Visit our women's boxing page for full details and schedule.
Can Penn State students join boxing classes?
Absolutely. Many of our members are Penn State students and staff. We're just minutes from campus with free parking, and class times on weekday evenings and Saturdays fit a student schedule. Coach Derek also leads the Penn State Boxing Club.
Can I train for amateur boxing competitions?
Yes. Coach Derek is the 2023 NCBA Coach of the Year and has prepared multiple fighters for USA Boxing sanctioned amateur bouts. If competition is your goal, we'll build your skills, conditioning, and fight readiness through structured progression and private training.
How do I get started?
Your first class is free. Contact us to schedule your intro class, or drop in a few minutes early before any boxing session. We'll get you set up with gloves, show you around, and have you training with the group right away.
